Tutorial 5 of 6

Focus timer, chimes and your session log

Beginner 7 min

Run Pomodoro, 52/17 or your own cycles with gentle chimes, quieter breaks and a calendar file, then read your week in the session heatmap.

The Timer tab runs focus sessions: blocks of concentrated work separated by breaks. It works with or without sound.

Choose a routine

Under Routine:

  • Pomodoro (25 / 5, long break after 4) — 25-minute focus blocks, 5-minute short breaks and a 15-minute long break after every fourth block, as in Francesco Cirillo's technique.
  • 52/17 (52 minutes focus, 17 break) — the ratio a time-tracking company reported for its most productive users.
  • Custom lengths — fields for Focus minutes, Short break minutes, Long break minutes and Long break after every n blocks (0 = never).
  • No focus timer — for rooms you use only to relax or sleep.

Focus blocks in this session sets how many blocks you want. Plan of the session lists every block and break with its length. There is no break after the last block.

Run it

Press Start the timer (or T). The readout shows Focus block 1 of 4 and the remaining time; the same appears on the stage and in the player. Pause the timer stops the countdown, Continue the timer resumes it, Skip to the next phase ends the current block or break early, and Reset starts over.

Chimes and breaks

When a phase changes, a short chime rings: a lower tone when a break begins, a higher one when focus begins again, and a final one at the end. Chime offers Soft bell (the overtones of a struck bar), Gentle tone and No chime; Chime volume sets its level and Test the chime plays it once.

Sound during breaks lowers the room's sound while you rest (or leave it Unchanged). The chime and break level do not depend on the master volume.

Put the plan in your calendar

Press Calendar file of the plan…, enter the Start, an Event title and, if you like, a Reminder before each block. Put breaks in the calendar file too adds the breaks as free time. Download .ics gives you a calendar file with one event per block in local time. The focusroom-focus-timer tool on usefulweb.site makes exactly the same file.

Your session log

Every focus block that finishes is logged in this browser — the date, start time, minutes and the room's name. If you reset or skip a block after at least one minute, the minutes you did are logged too.

Open the Log tab:

  • This week, Last 12 weeks, Days with focus time and Streak (days in a row) sum up your time.
  • The heatmap shows twelve weeks, Monday at the top, with darker squares for more focus minutes (1–24, 25–74, 75–149 and 150 or more minutes a day). Screen readers read each square as the date and its minutes.
  • Recent sessions lists the latest blocks.

Export log as CSV downloads the log for a spreadsheet. Clear log deletes it after you confirm. The log is never part of a room file or a share link, so sharing a room never shares your habits.
